US Senators have voted on Donald Trump's responsibility for the Jan.6 assault on Capitol Hill.

They declared the 45th President of the United States not guilty.

  • For Democrats, the ex-president called for the rally in Washington, he instructed protesters to "fight" and he did not do enough to stop the violence.

  • Its supporters said Friday that the Democratic camp had provided no evidence of its direct responsibility for the riots on Capitol Hill.

He is notably criticized for having launched "Fight like devils" to his supporters, just before they launched an assault on the headquarters of Congress.

"This is ordinary political rhetoric, no different from the language used by all parties for hundreds of years," pleaded his lawyer Michael van der Veen, warning of a lawsuit which he believes "divides the Nation".

  • Five people, including a police officer, were killed in the assault.

Two other officers committed suicide in the days that followed.

  • Donald Trump is the only American president to have twice undergone an "impeachment" procedure.

A first impeachment trial had taken place in December 2019 for abuse of power and obstructing the smooth running of Congress.

He is also the first president to face this procedure after the end of his mandate.
