Konstanz (dpa / lsw) - A kite surfer was out and about on Lake Constance on Saturday despite the frosty temperatures - and was in distress.

The paraglider line wrapped around both feet of the 20-year-old, causing him to fall into the water, the police said.

The young man could no longer free himself and therefore neither surf nor swim ashore.

With calls for help, the recreational athlete, who was severely hypothermic in the water, was able to attract the attention of a woman on the bank who notified the rescue workers.

The 20-year-old was first rescued in a fire boat and then brought to shore in a police boat.

He was taken to a clinic with severe hypothermia.

After the rescue operation on Saturday afternoon, the water police warned that water sports could quickly become life-threatening at the current temperatures.

The kite surfer was wearing a wetsuit.

"But that doesn't help at these temperatures," said a police spokesman.
