According to media reports, the leader of the US Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, wants to vote for an acquittal for former President Donald Trump in the impeachment process.

The Senate minority leader had informed his colleagues about his decision, reported on Saturday, among other things, the "Washington Post" and the news channel CNN.

The powerful puller therefore argues that there is no legal basis for a conviction.

If a guilty verdict against Trump was already highly unlikely, a conviction should now be excluded.

The vast majority of Republican senators have indicated that they do not want to vote for a conviction of the ex-president for storming the Capitol on January 6th.

The final vote in the process could take place on Saturday.

McConnell had distanced himself from Trump after storming the Capitol, sometimes with harsh words: "The mob was fed with lies," said McConnell in mid-January, saying he was "instigated by the president and other powerful people".

At the time, the senator hinted that he could vote for a condemnation of Trump.

"I have not yet made a final decision on how I will vote".

He wanted to hear the "legal arguments" in the process.

McConnell then voted twice to have the process rejected as unconstitutional.

Republicans argue that the Senate should only try a current president, not a previous president.

The Democrats and the majority of constitutional lawyers disagree with this view.
