Berlin (dpa) - The Robert Koch Institute continues to see the risk that more contagious variants of the corona virus will make it more difficult to fight the pandemic.

"I assume an increase, of course," said RKI President Lothar Wieler in Berlin.

“We have to at least slow down the spread of the variants.

We have to prevent new, worrying variants from emerging. "

The already known variants are more contagious and are also spreading in Germany.

New data on this are expected in the coming week.

Overall, however, Wieler currently sees Germany on the right track.

The number of cases fell.

This is not the all-clear: "The situation is stabilizing in many intensive care units, but it is still tense," said Wieler.

"And unfortunately a lot of people are still dying in connection with Covid-19."

During the entire pandemic, there have been more than 64,000 people in Germany so far.

Therefore, new infections must be prevented whenever possible.

"Every infection is one too many."

The data showed that efforts such as wearing masks, reducing contact, hygiene and ventilation worked - also against many other contagious diseases such as flu, colds, diarrhea and measles.
