Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the first federal states to start corona vaccinations for bedridden people in their apartments.

The start will be made on March 1st by four general practitioner pilot practices in Bitburg, Mayen (both Eifel), Wendelsheim (Rheinhessen) and Münchweiler (Pfalz).

Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) said on Friday in Mainz that she will be confident that other general practitioners will soon follow.

"As far as we know, we are the first federal state."

Around 20,000 to 25,000 people over 80 years of age are affected, who, according to the federal government, fall into the first category and cannot come to a vaccination center at all or only with the greatest stress.

"So far, these people have not had the chance to be vaccinated nationwide," said Bäzting-Lichtenthäler.

Biontech's findings that the vaccine could be transported under certain conditions was the prerequisite for the pilot project.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Medicines, confirmed the transportability on Tuesday.

The Biontech / Pfizer vaccine is the only one approved for this particularly vulnerable group against Covid-19, said the state chairwoman of the general practitioner association, Barbara Römer.

“The vaccination is eagerly awaited.

We are asked about it every day during our house calls. "
