Former US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, was one of the few prominent members of the Republican Party to have broken publicly with ex-President Donald Trump.

"He was taking a path that he shouldn't have taken - and we shouldn't have followed him or listened to him," said Haley in an interview with the Politico website.

"And we mustn't let something like this ever happen again."

49-year-old Haley, who was also governor of the state of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, is considered a possible Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Her clear criticism is significant: many Republican voters are still with Trump.

Those around him were already threatened with Republican congressmen and senators who oppose him to run Trump-friendly opponents against them.

Haley specifically condemned Trump criticizing Vice President Mike Pence on January 6th while his supporters were shouting "Hang Mike Pence" and looking for him in the stormy Capitol.

"That disgusts me."

At the same time, Haley tried to explain the behavior of her “friend” Trump: “As I understand it, he sincerely believes that he has been wronged.” She compared Trump to someone who says that grass is blue.

"If someone cannot distinguish colors and really believes that, is that irresponsible?"
