Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In North Rhine-Westphalia there are currently around 1200 suspected cases of the British corona variant B.1.1.7.

This was announced by a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, according to the "Westdeutsche Zeitung" (Friday).

Accordingly, there are currently around 100 confirmed cases of the mutation in the most populous federal state.

"We know (...) a further 1200 suspected cases of this variant, these are laboratory diagnostic indications based on variant-specific PCR."

According to the report, the situation around the South African variant is less tense.

The authorities currently counted eight confirmed cases;

around 130 suspected cases are known.

Out of concern about the corona variants, the federal and state governments decided in the middle of the week to extend the lockdown by a further three weeks until March 7th.

The number of new corona infections in North Rhine-Westphalia has fallen below the incidence value of 60 for the first time in months.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported a value of 59.3 new infections within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday.
