The suspense was short lived.

Tasked by President Sergio Mattarella with forming a new government at the beginning of the month, former President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi accepted the duties of Prime Minister on Friday 12 February.

The composition of his cabinet, unveiled in the wake, illustrates his desire to bring together "technocrats" and "politicians" within an enlarged government supported by a broad spectrum, from the center left to the hard right.

On the political side, Luigi di Maio, leader of the 5 Star Movement, retains the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, while Giancarlo Giorgetti, senior official of the League, is appointed to Industry, and Andrea Orlando, of the Democratic Party, recovers the Ministry of Labor.

On the “technicians” side, Luciana Lamorgese remains at the head of the Ministry of the Interior, Daniele Franco, number two of the Bank of Italy, inherits from the Ministry of the Economy and Roberto Cingolani, a physicist specializing in artificial intelligence, is appointed head of a new ministry for ecological transition.
