At least five people were killed and dozens more injured Thursday in a giant pile-up involving 100 vehicles on a Texas highway, a witness and authorities reported.

The chain collision, north of the city of Fort Worth, was arguably aided by the icy pavement, said Michael Drivdahl, the city's firefighter spokesperson.

Helpers counted five dead and transported 36 wounded to hospitals in the region, detailed Michael Drivdahl.

According to him, the toll could increase, rescuers still busy extricating victims stuck in their car.
