11 February 2021 If the new cases of Covid-19 in the general population have been stable for 3 weeks, among health workers they have decreased by 64.2%: from the 4,382 detected by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) in the week 13-19 January , when the administration of the second doses of vaccine was started, at 1,570 of the week 3-9 February. This is what the monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation reveals and, says the president Nino Cartabellotta, "this net reduction is probably the effect of the administration of about 1.9 million vaccine doses in this population category ".

On the morning of February 10, 1,214,139 people (2.04% of the population) had completed the vaccination cycle with the second dose, with marked regional differences: from 1.38% in Calabria to 3.58% in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

"Even six delays - says Renata Gili, Head of Research on Health Services of the Gimbe Foundation - are slowing down the vaccination campaign, the Regions are managing the doses correctly, completing the cycle in the correct time".

Compared to the categories of people vaccinated, 70% of the doses were intended for health workers, 18% for non-health personnel, 11% for staff and guests of the RSAs and less than 1% for people aged over 80.

Unfortunately, however, Gili continues, "only 3.6% (158,805) of the over 80s received at least one dose of vaccine, and only 2.2%, or 96,503, completed the vaccination cycle, percentages very far from the target. coverage recommended by the European Commission for this age group, ie 80% by 31 March 2021 ".

Variants alarm, in 17 provinces an increase in cases over 5%

As regards infections: in the week from 3 to 9 February 2021 the number of new infections from Sars-Cov-2 is stable compared to the previous week (84,711 compared to 84,652), but in 17 provinces the percentage increase of new cases exceeds 5% and these marked increases represent "red lights of the looming variants".

The Gimbe Foundation speaks of "an unfortunately only apparent calm".

In detail, last week saw a decrease in currently positive cases (413.967 compared to 437.765, equal to -5%), people in home isolation (392.312 compared to 415.234, equal to -5%), hospitalizations with symptoms (19.512 compared to 20,317, equal to -4%) and intensive care (2,143 compared to 2,214, equal to -3%). However, in 10 Regions there is a percentage increase in new cases and these increases exceed 5% in 17 provinces.

"Very critical situations such as those in Umbria - explains the president Nino Cartabellotta - where the new variants have quickly led to a surge in cases and the saturation of hospitals and intensive care could suddenly explode everywhere".

That is why it is essential to monitor all the red lights to implement timely containment strategies.Despite the reduction in pressure on hospitals, the number of deaths remains very high, albeit slightly down: they were 2,658 compared to -9% compared to the previous week .
