Hanover (dpa / lni) - After the massive onset of winter, the first light rail vehicles will start running again in the state capital Hanover from Monday.

The aim is to be able to "put at least some branches back into operation" next Monday, the operator Üstra announced on Thursday.

Until then, passengers are asked to use suitable bus connections.

"Our employees have been working on site for days in the most difficult weather conditions," said Üstra HR Director Denise Hain.

On Wednesday, the operator announced via Twitter that it would suspend light rail traffic in the entire network due to frost damage.

The operator announced that the causes of the many damage are still being researched.

Above all, pavement slabs at crossings, but also bitumen and asphalt pavement on the tracks, were pushed upwards at the beginning of the winter weather - the trams could no longer run over them.

It is assumed that the subsoil was saturated with water because of the heavy rainfall before the onset of winter.

The frost then pushed the plates upwards after the temperature drop.

It is also conceivable that the trams pushed snow under the systems while they were driving and lifted them.

The Üstra announced that subscribers to the Hanover metropolitan area will again receive a loyalty bonus of 20 percent for the months of March and April 2021.
