Mainz (dpa / lrs) - When vaccinating, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate Association of General Practitioners, the bureaucratic effort must be reduced before broad sections of the population can be given the protective spades.

"I think this can be implemented without any problems, since the general practitioners' practices already have professional vaccination documentation systems," said Barbara Römer, chairwoman of the association, of the German press agency.

"This is the only way we can get the vaccination process at a high speed across the board."

According to Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), all German citizens should be offered a vaccination against Corona by the end of summer at the latest.

Römer, who runs a practice in Saulheim in the Rhineland-Hesse, demanded that the “immense additional documentation effort” that is currently being carried out in the vaccination centers must be “massively streamlined” so that the vaccination can work with family doctors.

In their opinion, the best way to vaccinate the vast majority of the population is through general practitioners' practices.

“For decades, we family doctors in Germany have been vaccinating around 20 million people against influenza within three months in addition to our regular practice.

We know how we can integrate vaccination campaigns into practice. "

The patients trusted their general practitioners and also appreciated their expertise in vaccinating, said Römer.

"The family doctor's practice is and remains the lowest-threshold offer for a vaccination."

At the present time, "in the phase of pronounced vaccine deficiency", the establishment of vaccination centers was correct and necessary, explained Römer.

"However, figuratively speaking, I see this as a bridge that should only be built as long as necessary, but as short as possible."

At the moment, the general practitioners' offices are still waiting for a sufficient and easy-to-use vaccine supply, she said.

"If we have a sufficient amount of vaccine available, vaccination against Covid-19 belongs in the practice like any other vaccination."

Another reason that the authorities have so far mainly relied on large vaccination centers is that the first available vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna have to be cooled extremely technically in a technically complex manner - processing the vaccination campaign via the decentralized family doctor's practices would therefore be logistically much more difficult.
