Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - In the Corona year 2020 there were significantly fewer traffic jams on the highways in Saarland.

The queue length has decreased to a total of 4928 kilometers - that is a good 31 percent less than in the previous year (2019: 7200 kilometers), announced the ADAC Saarland on Thursday in Saarbrücken.

The congestion time was therefore reduced by almost 20 percent to 2248 hours.

A total of 6797 traffic jams were reported.

The main reason for the decrease in traffic jams was the lower volume of traffic on the motorways as a result of the corona pandemic, the ADAC further announced.

According to an estimate by the Federal Highway Research Institute, this was around twelve and 12 percent below the previous year's level.

The front runner among the traffic jams on motorways in Saarland last year was the one on December 1, 2020: On the A8 between Schwalbach and Bildstock, traffic jammed for over eight kilometers: Road users were therefore stuck in traffic jams for an average of 2.3 hours.
