Chemnitz (dpa) - The corona lockdown has given many consumers higher electricity bills.

More work from home and homeschooling would have led to an average additional consumption of 50 kilowatt hours per year in private households, informed the energy company EnviaM on Thursday.

Depending on the customer's tariff, on average for all households these are additional costs of 10 to 15 euros each.

Home office does not play a role for the power grid, said CEO Stephan Lowis.

"Only the consumption point changes."

Due to the lower industrial production, electricity consumption fell by up to 10 percent in the first lockdown in spring 2020.

In the meantime, however, it is back to normal, Lowis explained.

The data volume in the company's fiber optic network has doubled since the outbreak of the pandemic.

This year, in addition to business customers, private customers are to be connected for the first time.

Pilot communities are Groitzsch and Zwenkau in the Leipzig area.

According to its own information, EnviaM supplies more than 1.3 million customers with electricity, gas and heat.

The company thus sees itself as a leading regional energy service provider in Eastern Germany.

The majority of it is owned by the energy company Eon and around 650 municipalities.
