The two-time Spanish Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso was involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland, the Alpine F1 team (ex-Renault F1) announced Thursday evening.

"The team can confirm that Fernando Alonso was involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland. Fernando is conscious and feeling well. He is awaiting further medical examinations on Friday morning," writes Alpine F1 , indicating that further information will be given on Friday.

According to the Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, the accident took place near Lugano, in southern Switzerland.

Alonso was reportedly hit by a car, and it is possible that he suffered one or more fractures, the possible importance of which will be specified on Friday.

Alonso, crowned in 2005 and 2006 at Renault F1, must make his return to F1 this year, at Alpine F1, after two years of sabbatical following his last years of galley at McLaren.

Aged 39, he will be one of the two veterans of the 2021 field with Finland's Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo).
