Frankfurt / Langen (dpa) - The Corona crisis further paralyzed air traffic in Germany in January.

"The year 2021 starts even worse than last year ended," said the managing director responsible for pilot operations at Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS), Dirk Mahns.

The federal air traffic control established in 1993 registered only 74,543 take-offs, landings and overflights in that month, 68.1 percent less than a year earlier and fewer than ever in DFS history.

In December 2020 there were still 85,000 flight movements.

The international airports in Germany registered 72.3 percent fewer take-offs and landings in the year, but were hit differently due to the different proportion of the still flourishing cargo.

The Munich passenger hub recorded a drop of 84 percent and Leipzig / Halle only one of a good 10 percent.

The East German freight hub of the logistics company DHL thus became the second busiest airport after Frankfurt in January.

In January, the Frankfurt airport operator Fraport counted 882,869 passengers at Germany's largest aviation hub, 80.9 percent fewer than a year earlier, according to the company listed in the MDax.

As early as December, the volume fell by 81.7 percent year-on-year.

Many airlines have reacted to the lockdowns in numerous countries and further reduced their flight offers, which were already capped, in recent weeks.

Things continued to go much better in the cargo business.

In January, the volume of freight and airmail in Frankfurt increased year-on-year by 18.1 percent to 176,266 tons.

For the new year, Fraport boss Stefan Schulte expects a recovery in passenger traffic, especially in the second half of the year.

Overall, according to his estimate, the number of passengers will only reach 35 to 45 percent of the record year 2019.
