Oldenburg (dpa) - The Bundeswehr is already expecting operations in the fight against the corona pandemic by the end of the year.

That said the commander of the 1st Panzer Division, Major General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart, on Thursday in Oldenburg.

As the regional management staff west, his division organizes aid in the five federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Bremen and Saxony-Anhalt.

There are currently around 4,000 soldiers deployed there, and a total of around 8,000 people are tied up by the administrative assistance for civil institutions.

Most of the soldiers help with contact follow-up, tests and in retirement and nursing homes.

At the same time, the division had to fulfill its mission on missions abroad in Afghanistan, Mali and Lithuania, said von Sandrart.

The Bundeswehr is of course happy to help, said the two-star general.

At the same time, however, military training suffers from the double burden.

It will take a long time to compensate for this “dip in training and skills”.

"That's the price tag."
