Lugano (AP) - concerns about Fernando Alonso: The two-time Formula 1 world champion from Spain had an accident.

As announced by his racing team Alpine, Alonso was involved in a traffic accident while cycling in Switzerland.

Alonso was conscious and in good shape.

The 39-year-old is scheduled to undergo further medical examinations on Friday morning.

Alpine, the former Renault team, announced that it would not provide any further information for the time being.

There will be more updates on Friday.

"We hope that it is nothing and that you get well again as soon as possible," said Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr.

Well-being wishes to his compatriot.

"Get well soon," wrote Romain Grosjean.

The Frenchman miraculously survived a fire accident in his Haas in Bahrain at the end of November.

As the Italian newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport” wrote, Alonso was hit by a car while he was training on his bike near Lugano.

The 2005 and 2006 world champion was immediately taken to a local hospital.

Alonso is a passionate racing cyclist.

After a two-year Formula 1 break, the man from Oviedo will start this season for the Alpine team alongside Frenchman Esteban Ocon.

Alonso is in the middle of preparing for the new season, which is due to start on March 28th with the first Grand Prix in Bahrain.

The official test drives are also scheduled for March 12-14 in the desert state.

Alonso is making a Formula 1 comeback this season.

In 2001 he made his debut in the premier motorsport class for Minardi in Australia.

This was followed by two world titles with Renault, 32 race wins and 22 pole positions until his temporary departure at the end of 2018 in Abu Dhabi at the then suspended McLaren racing team.

The Spaniard has always been on the road professionally on four wheels since he left: on the long distance in Le Mans and Indianapolis, as well as on the off-road adventure Dakar Rally.

The horsepower expert did not lack the necessary motivation for the Formula 1 return.

"The only thing that counts is the stopwatch, not the age," he emphasized after his comeback announcement.
