Münster / Lengerich (dpa) - Almost five months after a series of accidents with cyclists near Lengerich (Steinfurt district), the public prosecutor's office accuses the suspects (44) of murder, attempted murder and dangerous interference with road traffic.

Instead of an indictment, an application for security proceedings was filed with the court, since the investigators believe that the woman is incompetent due to a mental illness - and at the same time could pose a threat to the general public.

As the public prosecutor's office in Münster announced on Wednesday, on September 27, 2020, the German is said to have "targeted" a couple who were driving on pedelecs with their car in order to kill them.

The 63-year-old and his wife (64) survived injured.

Then, according to the investigators, the woman drove through a site fence, an iron gate, a garden and an orchard.

On a private property, she raced towards the resident in order to kill her - according to the prosecutor.

The woman jumped aside and was unharmed.

Again on a country road, she is said to have raced into three cyclists on the opposite lane at 109 kilometers per hour in order to kill them all.

She hit a 47-year-old racing cyclist head-on and died.

The other two cyclists were able to get to safety and were uninjured.

The woman hit a tree with her car and was seriously injured herself.

Your journey was thus over 20 minutes after the first attack.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the 44-year-old has said so far that she has not wanted to injure or even kill anyone.

The investigators don't believe that.

They assume a mental illness that has existed for years, which led to the fatal series of accidents on the day of the incident.

The woman is in a forensic clinic and, according to the public prosecutor's office, will continue to be housed in a psychiatric clinic.

The Münster Regional Court now has to decide on the opening of the security proceedings.
