Potsdam (dpa / bb) - According to Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD), the primary schools in Brandenburg are expected to reopen on February 22nd with alternating lessons in the Corona crisis.

The head of government announced this on Wednesday after talks between the federal and state governments.

The cabinet decision is planned for this Friday.

The lockdown should in principle be extended to March 7th, but hairdressers should be able to reopen as early as March 1st.

Older people in particular are reliant on using this service.

"For example, the primary schools in the federal states will be on different dates, but most of them - probably also here in Brandenburg - will open their doors again on February 22 with alternating lessons for the pupils," said Woidke on the Berlin-Brandenburg radio (RBB).

It is planned to aim for less than 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in one week for easing.

"We can perhaps achieve that in Brandenburg in three or four weeks, so that we can talk about further opening steps, for example the retail sector here."

The number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants in one week was around 80 in the country on Wednesday. The head of government did not give the all-clear: "We are not through yet."

Woidke spoke of a large dark shadow because of the coronavirus variants.

A hard lockdown has been in effect in Brandenburg since December 16.

At that time, exit restrictions were imposed.

The shops are closed, except for the shops for everyday necessities such as supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies and drugstores, but also bookshops.

Barber shops are also closed.

Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited.

From January 9, Brandenburg restricted the range of motion in extreme corona hotspots with more than 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week - tourist travel and sports outside a radius of 15 kilometers from the municipality are prohibited there.

The night exit restriction, however, was lifted.

The education ministers of the federal states spoke out on Monday that the corona numbers continued to fall, that schools in Germany should gradually reopen from next week.

Brandenburg's Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD) is currently president of the Standing Conference.
