Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Undecided citizens can check their preferences on the Internet before voting for the state election.

The federal and state centers for political education started the “Wahl-O-Mat” for Rhineland-Palatinate on Wednesday.

This offers a "simple way to deal with the statements of the political parties," said the director of the state center for political education, Bernhard Kukatzki.

In the state elections in 2016, more than 716,000 people took advantage of the offer.

The questionnaire primarily offers country-specific topics to choose from.

This includes, for example, attitudes towards ecological viticulture, the controversial construction of a bridge over the Middle Rhine or lowering the voting age to 16 years.

After approval, rejection or a neutral answer to a total of 38 theses, the web application shows the degree of agreement with the positions of the 13 parties and associations that are allowed to vote on March 14th.

"At a time when street election campaigns are hardly possible, the" Wahl-O-Mat "is particularly important," said the deputy director of the state center for political education, Sarah Scholl-Schneider, of the German press agency.

To select the theses, an editorial team from the state and federal centers for political education came together with 15 youths and young adults from all over Rhineland-Palatinate, who were selected from 50 applications.

"It is the aim of the" Wahl-O-Mats "to make the differentiation of the parties clear," explained Scholl-Schneider.

The cooperation of the parties was very good.

"Smaller parties in particular see the Internet application as an opportunity to be perceived at all."
