Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In view of the corona pandemic in the previous year, tourism in Baden-Württemberg fell back to the level of decades ago.

According to the State Statistical Office in Stuttgart, the number of guests arriving in hotels, guesthouses and other accommodations fell by 48.9 percent year-on-year to just 11.9 million.

The last time the statisticians registered fewer tourists was in 1997.

The number of overnight stays also fell dramatically, according to Wednesday's data - by 40.2 percent to only 34.2 million.

The last time there were fewer overnight stays in the southwest was in 1985.

Slumps of this magnitude were expected because of the lockdown-related multiple closings of the hospitality industry and the decreased desire to travel for many people for fear of infection.

From March onwards, the number of overnight stays remained constant in the double-digit percentage range below the previous year's figures.

The statisticians recorded particularly blatant declines in this category at the beginning of the pandemic in April (minus 88.3 percent) and May (minus 79.1 percent) and later in November (minus 66.7 percent) and December (minus 74, 0 percent) after the Christmas markets were canceled.

In the summer, when the infection situation seemed to be under control at times, tourism recovered somewhat, but also remained well below the strong results of previous years.

Until the Corona crisis, the southwest tourism industry had booked several record years in a row.

In Baden-Württemberg, according to the Ministry of Tourism, around 390,000 jobs depend on this industry, and tourism generated an annual turnover of more than 25 billion euros until the pandemic.
