The Security Media Cell in Iraq announced the launch of a large joint military operation against ISIS in the western and northwestern regions of the capital, Baghdad, with the support of Iraqi military aircraft.

The cell stated - in a statement - that the operation aims to inspect areas west of Baghdad, Karma Island and eastern Lake Tharthar (belonging to the Anbar Province in western Iraq) and pursue the organization cells there, in addition to tightening the boundaries between the operational leaders in the governorates of Anbar, Samarra (north) and Baghdad.

The Iraqi security authorities recently launched a number of military operations to pursue ISIS cells in different areas in response to armed operations carried out by the organization in the provinces of Diyala (east), Kirkuk, Salah al-Din (north), and Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Iraq announced the killing of an army soldier and wounding others, following an attack by militants likely to be affiliated with ISIS in Diyala province at dawn today, Wednesday, according to a security source.

The source said that gunmen attacked in the early hours of a military checkpoint in the Jalawla region, northeast of Diyala, and clashed with automatic weapons with the army.

Since January 20, the Iraqi security forces have launched large-scale military operations in the country to pursue ISIS militants, following a double suicide bombing in Baghdad that left 32 dead and 110 wounded, and the organization claimed to implement it.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over the organization by regaining all of its territory from it, but recent months have witnessed an increase in the frequency of attacks by militants affiliated with the organization, especially in the area between Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Diyala, known as the Triangle of Death.
