Berlin (dpa / bb) - Vaccination center number four is due to start in northwest Berlin on Wednesday.

It is located in Terminal C of the former Tegel Airport, which has not been used since the beginning of November, as the spokeswoman for the vaccination centers, Regina Kneiding, explained on Tuesday.

The new vaccine from the British-Swedish manufacturer Astrazeneca is to be used there in the future, of which 14,400 doses arrived in Berlin on Saturday.

A special feature: unlike the vaccine from Biontech-Pfizer and that of the US manufacturer Moderna, it is only injected into people under 65 years of age.

The vaccination center in Tegel is therefore out of the question for older Berliners.

According to Kneiding, medical staff will first receive their vaccinations there.

Free taxi rides, which are reserved for people over the age of 80, are therefore not available to the vaccination center in Tegel, said Kneiding, but there is a free bus shuttle.

The vaccination center is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

In full operation, up to 3800 vaccinations per day should be possible.

But that was not to be expected at the start, said Kneiding.

The DRK district association Müggelspree is responsible for the operation, whose helpers are on duty in Terminal C.

Kneiding does not expect any noticeable restrictions in vaccination operations due to the winter weather.

So far, the vaccination center in the arena in Treptow, the one on the exhibition grounds and the one in the Erika-Heß-Eisstadion in Wedding are open.

The number of daily vaccinations, which was last around 3000 there, should increase with the start of the fourth vaccination center.

Of the up to 20,000 vaccinations that Health Senator Dilek Kalayci spoke of in late autumn, as soon as all six planned vaccination centers are in operation, this is still a long way off.

The two vaccination centers that have not yet been opened are located in Hangar 4 at the former Tempelhof Airport and in the Velodrom in Pankow.

It is not yet known when they will be launched.
