Berlin (dpa / bb) - Around six months after an almost fatal knife attack on a woman in an apartment building in Berlin, the trial against a 19-year-old has started at the regional court of the capital.

The public prosecutor's office accuses the German of attempted murder.

He attacked the 32-year-old woman from behind, according to the indictment read out on Tuesday at the beginning of the trial.

The 19-year-old wanted to vent his aggression on the "arbitrarily chosen" victim because of family and partnership disputes.

The defense attorney announced that her client would comment at a later date.

According to investigations, the woman had just stepped out of the elevator when she was attacked in the hallway of her apartment building in Berlin-Friedrichshain on the evening of August 10, 2020.

The 19-year-old brought the unknown woman to the ground and stabbed her with a knife "with the intention of killing at least three vehemently stabs", according to the prosecution.

The woman managed to cross her arms in front of her body and scream loudly.

When her husband, who was in the apartment, and neighbors came to the rescue, the perpetrator fled.

The 32-year-old was injured in her lungs, among other things, according to the prosecution.

"Due to the cuts and stab wounds, she had to undergo emergency surgery and intensive medical care."

He has been in custody since then.

At the time of the offense, he was looking for training, the defendant said.

On the sidelines of the hearing it was said that until the act, the young man had been inconspicuous with the police and the judiciary.

Before the knife attack, he separated from his girlfriend.

The trial will continue on February 10th.
