A majority of US senators (56 against 44) voted on Tuesday, February 9, for the entire impeachment trial against former Republican President Donald Trump to take place, supporting the argument presented by Democrats that the Constitution authorizes such a procedure.
Lawyers for Donald Trump, whose presidential term ended on January 20, argued that their client could not be tried by the Senate since he was no longer in office at the White House.
The House of Representatives indicted Donald Trump for the second time last month, accusing him of "inciting insurgency" on January 6, when his supporters carried out an attack on the Capitol in Washington.
