Erfurt (dpa / th) - In Thuringia, severe permafrost must be expected in the coming days.

There was already a foretaste in the night from Monday to Tuesday.

There are still restrictions on rail traffic.

TEMPERATURES: It was coldest on Tuesday night in Olbersleben in the Sömmerda district - the thermometer showed minus 21.4 degrees.

However, that was still a bit far from a Thuringian cold record.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), this was measured on February 2, 1830 in Jena at minus 30.6 degrees.

"Until Sunday, severe permafrost, which means permanently below minus ten degrees, must be expected," said DWD meteorologist Cathleen Hickmann.

Local temperatures of minus 25 degrees are to be expected.

ICE SURFACES: Despite the currently strong sub-zero temperatures, the water rescue service of the Thuringia Association of the German Red Cross (DRK) urgently warns against stepping on ice surfaces of bodies of water.

"In principle, only released ice surfaces should be used," said a spokesman for the Thuringian DRK in Erfurt.

Particularly dangerous places in lakes are the areas near an inlet through a stream.
