Berlin (dpa / bb) - Significantly fewer young people started training in Berlin last year.

The number of new contracts in the first year of the Corona crisis fell by around 17.5 percent compared to 2019, as the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) announced on Tuesday.

The sectors that were particularly hard hit by the crisis hired fewer young people than usual. The number of new training contracts for event technicians fell by more than half.

In the hotel, restaurant and tourism sector, too, the declines were more than 40 percent.

Training means planning for the future of the next two to three years, said the President of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce, Beatrice Kramm.

"Many companies lacked - and still lack - this planning horizon."

In turn, the number of contracts increased in some sectors.

Railway companies in particular were hiring: the number of training contracts rose by 45 percent last year compared to the previous year.

For IT system electronics, the increase was more than 30 percent.

However, these sectors were unable to compensate for the general decline.

In total, the Berlin economy offered around 14,900 apprenticeship positions last year, the IHK further announced.

That was around 13 percent less than in 2019. More than 1,600 of the positions remained vacant.

According to statistics from the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency, there were and are currently almost 3400 young people who are registered as looking for training.

But those who were already in the middle of their training didn't have to worry any more than usual. Around 2800 contracts were terminated last year, the lowest number in five years.

According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the dissolution rate in 2020 was almost 12 percent.
