Merseburg (dpa) - The district administrator of the Saalekreis, Hartmut Handschak (independent), had himself vaccinated last December.

A spokeswoman for the district confirmed this on Tuesday.

Handschak had already received an injection on December 31, shortly after the start of the nationwide vaccination campaign.

Initially, the "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung" reported on it.

The 59-year-old justified himself in the newspaper by saying that he had been to a consultation appointment at a clinic that had already started to vaccinate its employees.

This left a dose for which there were neither employees willing to vaccinate nor suitable patients.

That is why he accepted the “vaccination offer”.

Handschak added: "Given the current situation, I would no longer accept it."

For several days there has been outrage about the early vaccination of some local politicians, although it would not have been their turn according to the vaccination ordinance and the groups defined therein.

In Halle an der Saale, 63-year-old Lord Mayor Bernd Wiegand (non-party) had himself vaccinated in January.
