Polish video game maker CD Projekt RED, author of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, announced on Tuesday that it had had data stolen in a "targeted cyber attack".

"An unidentified actor obtained unauthorized access to our internal network, collected some data belonging to the CD PROJEKT group and left a ransom note," the group said on Twitter.

The studio said the incident happened on Monday and contacted police.

CD Projekt released a copy of the ransom note in which hackers claim to have stolen source codes of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, as well as internal documents.

"If we do not come to an agreement, your source codes will be sold or disclosed online," read the note which gives the group 48 hours to respond.

"Investors will lose confidence in your group and your stock will plunge even lower," continue the cyber hackers.

Shares of CD Projekt were trading down 5.2% on the Warsaw Stock Exchange around 9:00 GMT.

The group's shares had already plunged after a series of problems with the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 release in December, before resuming last month when billionaire Elon Musk praised its design.

The Polish studio said it did not intend to "give in to demands or negotiate".

"We are taking the necessary measures to limit the consequences of a potential disclosure" of data, assured CD Projekt RED.

"At this stage, we can confirm that to our knowledge, the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or customers of our services", assured the group.
