It has become clear that TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer of semiconductors, plans to establish a research and development base for advanced semiconductors in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture.

At the board meeting on the 9th, TSMC decided to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in Japan.

According to TSMC officials, we plan to establish a research and development base for advanced semiconductor materials in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture by the end of the year, and will proceed with research and development in collaboration with Japanese companies.

The Japanese government has increased the fund for the development of advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology by 90 billion yen in the third supplementary budget this year, and according to Japanese and Taiwanese sources, if there is a request from the TSMC side, this fund will be used. It means that there is a possibility of supporting it.

TSMC has world-leading semiconductor manufacturing technology and plans to build a new factory in Arizona in response to the strong request of the former Trump administration in the United States and start mass production in 2024.

Japan-Taiwan sources say that Japan can also be expected to strengthen the foundation of the semiconductor industry by attracting TSMC's technology development bases.

Taiwanese experts familiar with the semiconductor industry see that TSMC has the advantage of partnering with Japan in research and development on materials, as Japan has strengths in semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials.
