Düsseldorf (dpa) - RWE boss Rolf Martin Schmitz will hand over the chairmanship of the energy company to his designated successor Markus Krebber two months earlier than originally planned.

"In coordination with the supervisory board, I will resign from my management board mandate at the end of April, shortly after the general meeting," Schmitz told the "Handelsblatt".

The handover of the baton to CFO Krebber was actually planned for June 30, but for Schmitz the course of the Annual General Meeting is now the “perfect time for the handover”.

The 63-year-old emphasized: "I have held board positions since 1998, and at some point it's good."

The change at the top of RWE was announced in April 2020.

Schmitz has been a member of the management board of the energy company since 2009 and has been CEO since 2016.

With Markus Krebber he knows RWE is in good hands, said Schmitz: "The nuclear phase-out has been dealt with, the phase-out of coal is dry, the financial situation is solid - and RWE has a future with renewable energies."
