“When we discussed this topic at the last briefing, we said that based on the rate of increase in morbidity, we assumed that December would be the busiest month in terms of mortality compared to all other months of the year,” Golikova said.

According to her, “this is what happened, and, in fact, the complexity of December influenced the overall annual mortality rates in Russia for 2020”.

She said that according to preliminary data from Rosstat, "mortality in the Russian Federation in 2020 increased by 17.9% compared to 2019."

Golikova noted that "this is excess mortality, which includes mortality from COVID."

“Once again, I would like to note that the data are preliminary and will be further specified,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.

Earlier, the head of the Russian Ministry of Health, Mikhail Murashko, said that, according to preliminary data, in 2020 the country recorded a decrease in mortality from cancer.
