08 February 2021 With 395,153 infections and 7,816 deaths from Covid recorded in just under 24 hours from the Johns Hopkins University database, the world has now passed the milestone of two million and three hundred thousand deaths since the appearance of Covid-19.

To be precise, 106,166,898 infections have been reported to date, of which 2,317,379 were fatal.

Countries with over 2 million cases

At the level of individual countries, the

United States

remains by far the nation that reports the largest number of infections, with over 27 million confirmed cases (27,006,445).

Among the countries that have exceeded 2 million cases follow

India

(10,838,194),

Brazil

(9,524,640),

Great Britain

(3,957,177),

Russia

(3,923,461),

France

(3,395,981),

Spain

(2,941,990), and

Italy

, where yesterday 11,641 new cases and 270 deaths were detected with a positivity index that rises to 5.62% for a total of 2,636,738 infections.

The ranking continues with

Turkey

(2,531,456),

Germany

(2,291,673) and

Colombia

(2,157,216).

United States vs China

On a Sunday - the one just passed - in which China returned to mark a zero on the bulletin of new infections from Covid-19 (it hadn't happened since December 16) and 14 cases imported from abroad, the United States, with at least 87,727 positivity in 14 hours (source Nyt), they have exceeded 27 million infections since the onset of the disease.

According to the numbers, the gap that has so far characterized the impact of the disease on the two nations appears abysmal.

According to the Johns Hopkins University database, out of about one billion and 400 million inhabitants, China has detected just 100,389 infections and 4,822 deaths since the appearance of the disease, while the States (with 328 million inhabitants) have now reached 27,006. 445 infections, of which 463,471 proved to be lethal: a value that has now largely exceeded the total number of US victims throughout the Second World War.

14 countries that have never seen covid

Fourteen countries in the world have never known coronavirus.

This was revealed by a report by the World Health Organization drawn up one year after the start of the pandemic.

From American Samoa to Sant'Elena, twelve of these "covid free" paradises are islands or islets thousands and thousands of kilometers from the coast that have implemented very strict entry policies since the beginning, closing themselves off to the outside world.

On the other two, North Korea and Turkmenistan, the scientific community is skeptical.

Experts doubt the accuracy of their health data and the willingness to make them public.

Made up of 15 small islands in the South Pacific more than 3,000 kilometers from New Zealand, the

Cook Islands

managed to save themselves from the coronavirus by imposing mandatory entry quarantine and a temporary ban on boats in its ports, including cruise ships.

Strict rules also for

American Samoa

, in the southern Pacific, which a year ago closed the borders even to residents who were abroad.

The islanders were only able to return home two weeks ago.

Narau

, the third smallest town in the world near Kiribati, was

also saved from the covid

.

Very poor, with the highest number of overweight people in the world and a life expectancy of less than 50 years, if the virus had arrived it would have been a massacre.

Palau

, made up of 300 islands and close to the Philippines, in addition to not having recorded any coronavirus cases, could be one of the first countries in the world to vaccinate the entire population.

In

St. Helena

, a British territory in the Atlantic Ocean and one of the most remote places in the world, tampons have been imposed on those who arrive and those who leave the island.

Certainly favored by their geographical position, from

Tonga

to

Tuvalu

these territories managed to save themselves from the pandemic only in this way: by closing ports and airports, imposing quarantine and, in some cases, lockdowns.

The situation is different

in North Korea

and

Turkmenistan

, whose data have been contested by the scientific community.

Kim Jong Un has imposed very strict restrictions on the population that have further affected an economic situation already in critical conditions.

Furthermore, for some, the fact that borders with China and South Korea makes the absence of cases of covid unlikely.
