The African Union called - in a statement concluding the work of the summit 34 - to find a just political solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with the principles of international law, and its leaders pledged to work to confront the spread of the Corona virus, and to strengthen the institutions of the Union.

The final declaration of the two-day summit called on African countries to end all forms of engagement with Israel, and confirmed decisions and recommendations, including uniting efforts in facing the challenges associated with the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.

The president of the current session of the African Union, President of the Congo Felix Antoine, pledged to work to unify the efforts of the continent to provide the Corona vaccine to all member states in a fair and timely manner, and he also called for concerted efforts to combat extremism and terrorism.

Palestine

The Union renewed its desire to find a just political solution to the Palestine issue in accordance with the principles of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, leading to the complete end of the Israeli occupation and the independence of the State of Palestine and its capital, East Jerusalem, within the borders of June 4, 1967.

According to the Al-Jazeera correspondent, the summit condemned the discriminatory Israeli legal system and its arbitrary measures and the sentences issued against Palestinian detainees and prisoners, especially children, women, the elderly, and patients who are deprived of the minimum rights guaranteed by international law and human rights principles.

The statement called on the Israeli occupation for the immediate and unconditional release of all Palestinian and Arab detainees and prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Union reform

The first day of the African Union summit witnessed the election of the leadership of the Commission, a review of hot files on the continent, such as the problem of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, as well as the challenges of the emerging Corona virus.

The summit kicked off Saturday via video technology due to the Coronavirus.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted Sunday as saying that the union must carry out comprehensive reform to remain able to do its part.

"Global realities require reform of the African Union if it is to remain closely related to intergovernmental processes," Bukhari said - in his statement at the conclusion of the virtual summit.

"Nigeria calls for the reform of the African Union Commission to be efficient and effective and fully committed to fulfilling its duties and responsibilities," he added.
