Betzenrod / Kassel (dpa / lhe) - The onset of snowfall and freezing rain led to obstructions on the streets in parts of Hesse on Saturday evening.

In the Vogelsberg district, a 27-year-old man was seriously injured in a traffic accident on a slippery road.

Shortly before Betzenrod, the man probably lost control of his car due to inappropriate speed at the exit of a curve, the police said.

The car spun to the left, overturned, and landed in a field on the roof.

Other drivers were able to rescue the driver from his car.

He sustained serious injuries in the accident and was taken to a clinic by ambulance.

On the A5 and A7 motorways, heavy snowfall in parts of the evening caused problems for drivers, said a police spokesman.

But initially there were no major accidents.

The first snowfall set in in northern Hesse in the evening.

This did not lead to any major problems on the streets, said a spokesman for the Kassel police headquarters.

Apparently, many people would have followed the warnings and left their cars.

The German Weather Service in Offenbach had warned of “extremely strong snow drifts” and slippery roads this weekend for Sunday night.

Already for the night of Sunday, the meteorologists in the north of the country expected severe snowfall and freezing rain.
