Grammendorf (dpa / mv) - There is another avian influenza outbreak in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Because of the Tieseuchenfall in Grammendorf, the district of Vorpommern-Rügen has ordered a "stabling obligation" in the entire district, as a district spokesman said on Sunday.

The virus of the subtype H5N8 was found in several turkeys in the larger commercial animal husbandry on Sunday.

How many animals must now be killed has not yet been announced.

The district also arranged a smaller restricted area and an observation area.

In the areas, animal keepers were obliged to secure the entrances and exits to the stalls against unauthorized entry and to regularly clean and disinfect equipment or vehicles used in poultry keeping.

Live birds, meat, eggs and poultry products are not allowed to be traded in either area.

There had recently been several cases of avian influenza in the northeast.

The animal disease had only appeared a few days ago in the Grimmen zoo in Western Pomerania-Rügen.

There have been similar cases in the last few days in the districts of Northwest Mecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim, where tens of thousands of birds had to be killed.

Experts estimate that the virus is introduced through contact with infected wild birds.

This could also be done indirectly via people, vehicles, food or equipment.
