Regional and international reactions have followed regarding the selection of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum as a new authority to lead the country, while Western powers pledged to impose respect for the agreement and punish violators.

The United States and the European Union welcomed the agreement reached by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum on a unified, interim Libyan executive authority to lead the country.

A joint US-European statement called on all Libyan authorities and actors to ensure a smooth and constructive handover of power to the new executive authority.

The statement also stressed that the new interim government - which will be proposed by the Prime Minister-designate - must be comprehensive and allow representation for all Libyans.

The statement called on the delegates of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to preserve their positions to ensure that the new executive authority will prepare for the elections scheduled to take place next December.

The United States and the European Union affirmed their readiness to hold accountable anyone who threatens stability or undermines the political process in Libya.

For its part, the UN Security Council requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to quickly deploy a UN team to Libya with the aim of laying the foundation for a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire in the country.

Leadership composition

The Forum for Political Dialogue in Geneva elected, on Friday, Muhammad Yunus Al-Manfi as Chairman of the Presidential Council.

Two deputies were chosen for the exiled: Musa al-Koni, who belongs to the Tuareg, and Abdullah Hussein, who is a member of the House of Representatives from the city of Zawiya in the west.

The Dialogue Forum chose Abdul Hamid Muhammad Dabaiba, who is from Sabratha, as prime minister for the transitional period.

Dabaiba's list was not expected to win before the list, which includes the powerful Interior Minister in the Government of National Accord Fathi Bashagha and the speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh.

The United Nations says it will entrust the transitional council with the task of "reuniting state institutions and ensuring security" until the next elections.

In New York, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "I think that represents a breakthrough," adding that it was "very good news in our search for peace" after the ceasefire agreement.

The governments of Germany, France, Italy and Britain joined the United States in welcoming the new Libyan transitional government, but warned that "there is still a long way to go."

In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry wished the new team to "successfully solve all difficult issues in the transitional period," including the organization of a referendum on the constitution and general elections.
