Magdeburg / Leipzig (dpa / sa) - According to the German Weather Service (DWD), Saxony-Anhalt is facing a storm weekend with heavy snowfall, sometimes extreme drifts and freezing rain.

The storm warning published on Saturday afternoon is initially expected to apply until Sunday evening (9 p.m.), the DWD announced in Leipzig.

All regions of the country are affected - from the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in the north to the Burgenlandkreis in the south.

The most intense snowfall occurs on Sunday night.

In an area from the Ruhr area through southern Lower Saxony to Saxony-Anhalt, up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow could fall, it said.

From East Westphalia to the Harz Mountains, up to 30 centimeters are also possible.

According to the DWD, a sharp air mass boundary with very large temperature differences has formed over Germany.

This separates very cold air in the north from warm and humid air in the south.

Such a weather situation is not an everyday situation even for meteorologists, it said.

In addition to the heavy snowfall, the wind blowing from the east is a problem.

The DWD assumes that there will be traffic obstructions due to drifts.

For the Harz, the district of Mansfeld-Südharz and the Salzlandkreis, a storm warning applies to extremely heavy snowdrifts.

Basically, it is advisable to avoid driving, especially on Sundays.
