Magdeburg (dpa) - The AfD in Saxony-Anhalt wants to try in various ways to stop an observation by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and to learn more about the extent.

All members should request the data stored about themselves from the authority and share the findings with the party, recommends the state executive in a letter to the AfD-Basis, which is available to the German press agency.

The "Mitteldeutsche Zeitung" (Saturday) had previously reported on the letter.

At the same time, the board had commissioned a law firm to warn the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and to defend itself against a possible observation in an urgent procedure, it said.

According to dpa information and several media reports, the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt has been monitored by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution with intelligence means since mid-January.

According to state law, this is only possible if the authorities have sufficient evidence that the party is pursuing anti-constitutional efforts.

The authority does not officially comment on the legal situation, but informed the state parliament's secret control committee, which controls the protection of the constitution.

The AfD is also represented there by a member.

It has long been known that the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the formally dissolved AfD “wing” as a proven extremist endeavor, continues to attribute 7,000 members to it and names the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament member Hans-Thomas Tillschneider as one of the leading “wing” heads .
