Chemnitz (dpa / sn) - According to the police, around 1000 people demonstrated against current corona protective measures on Saturday afternoon in Chemnitz.

The accesses to the area in the city center were temporarily closed because more people streamed into the area, said a police spokesman for the German press agency.

Saxony's Corona Protection Ordinance currently allows a maximum of 1000 participants for outdoor gatherings.

The rally was entitled "Chemnitz stands up".

"We are the people", "Do we really have a pandemic" and "The people are fed up" had participants written on posters.

Some had painted red crosses on their mouth and nose protection - in protest against the requirement that everyone wear medical masks.

In the afternoon the police spoke of a calm course;

there were only isolated disruptions.

People from the surrounding area also came to Chemnitz in motorcars for the rally - mainly from Vogtland and the Zwickau district.

From these two regions there were about 240 vehicles, informed the Zwickau police department.

On the sidelines of the rally in Chemnitz there was a spontaneous counter-demonstration.

A police spokesman spoke of about 20 people.

The police objected to statements on Twitter that the safety of the participants was not guaranteed.

"The safety of the participants was never endangered," said a spokesman.
