Berlin (dpa) - The number of people who died after a corona infection in Germany has risen to more than 60,000.

There were 855 new deaths recorded within 24 hours - a total of 60,597.

This was announced by the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert called the number of deaths "shockingly high".

Several hundred people die every day after a corona infection.

The previous day, 786 new deaths had been reported.

Two weeks ago, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for the #lichtfenster campaign and from then on put a light in a window of Bellevue Palace in the evening to commemorate the dead of the corona pandemic.

It should also be thought of those who are fighting for their lives.

The corona deaths are also thought of in social media under #mehralsnureinezahl.

After Easter in Berlin, Steinmeier wants to host a central memorial service for the dead of the pandemic in Germany.

The very elderly bear the greatest risk of death.

"If 80 percent of the people in nursing homes have at least now received a first vaccination, that's a good deal more security," said Seibert.

However, all efforts such as further vaccinations and tests would have to be made in the homes to defuse the situation there.

The German Foundation for Patient Protection called for more attention to be paid to those in need of care.

"The rate of new infections has fallen by two thirds since the turn of the year," said Eugen Brysch, the board member of the German press agency in Berlin.

"But the number of people nationwide who died of and with Covid-19 is not falling to the same extent."

Over 30,000 people died in just six weeks.

90 percent of the deceased were over 70 years old.

For the residents who are particularly often affected, Brysch questioned whether the elderly should always be offered a vaccination regardless of an infection.

It had to be clarified whether this group of people could possibly have a connection between high death rates and vaccination.

"But this requires consistent monitoring of this group of people before and after the first injection."

Experts recently discussed whether possible side effects of the vaccination such as fever, nausea and diarrhea could contribute to a fatal outcome in the very old.

However, the opinion was expressed that the risk of infection is significantly higher even in older people with previous illnesses.
