Memmingen (dpa / lby) - According to the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), the gas explosion in Memmingen in Swabia with five injured could have turned out much worse.

"With the force of the explosion, we can speak of luck that there are no dead," said BRK district manager Wilhelm Lehner in a press release on Friday.

In the accident in a rescue service building, a cleaning worker was seriously injured, and the other injured were also employees.

According to the BRK, the emergency call was made by uninjured ambulance workers who were in an ambulance early on Friday morning at the time of the explosion and who carried out the routine check there before the start of duty.

"That was a big shock in the morning," said Lehner.

"We will accompany and support the colleagues comprehensively, also in processing this dramatic experience."

The emergency services suspected a defective gas line, in the morning the road should be opened in search of the leak.

A spokeswoman for the city of Memmingen said several houses had been evacuated within 100 meters of the site of the accident.

Affected residents would be looked after in a nearby fire station.

According to the Bavarian Red Cross, there were five people.

The building of the ambulance is unusable until further notice.
