04 February 2021 The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, applauds Mario Draghi.

"At the ECB he played an extraordinary role and everyone is aware of this. Not only in Italy", he declared in an interview with 'La Stampa' (and other European media) on newsstands tomorrow, of which an extract was published in the website of the Turin newspaper.

The EU leader indulged in the positive comment while stating that she wanted to respect the "golden rule" of Brussels not to go into the details of the internal politics of the states.

In the interview, von der Leyen defends his Commission's strategy in the fight against Covid and - above all - the vaccine purchase campaign on which harsh criticism is raining down.

"Last year we focused on the need to develop vaccines, but perhaps - in parallel - we should have focused more on the problems related to their mass production. We underestimated them. In hindsight we should also have explained better to citizens. that the distribution process would be slow because it is a completely new procedure, "he admitted.

Now the goal is "to look at other sites and invest together in new production capacities, knowing that it takes months to get up and running. That's why it's best to prepare now, you never know what will happen in twelve months".
