Hong Kong (dpa) - The sharp rise in demand for notebook computers during the Corona crisis brought world market leader Lenovo a record quarter.

The Chinese group increased sales by 22 percent to 17.2 billion dollars.

The profit there was a jump of 53 percent to 395 million dollars, as Lenovo announced.

The pandemic sparked a rush of businesses and consumers to use notebooks to work and study in their own four walls.

According to calculations by the analysis firm IDC, Lenovo was the clear number one with a good 23 million computers sold and a market share of 25 percent.

In Germany, Lenovo even has a 35 percent market share.

The company expects the boom to continue this year.

In Germany, sales in December fell year-on-year - because the devices were sold out, among other things due to the high demand from the education sector.

"You haven't seen anything like this in Germany before," said Lenovo manager Mirco Krebs.

One of the drivers is that more than one PC is increasingly entering households.

Laptops accounted for 77 percent of Lenovo sales recently, but the company expects that desktop computers will also have a future.
