Bischofsgrün (dpa / lby) - The popular giant snowman in the Franconian Bischofsgrün will not be built this year.

"Of course we are sad," said Wilhelm Zapf from the health and tourist information office in Bischofsgrün after the decision on Thursday.

"But we don't see any alternative to the current Corona measures."

Even building the snowman would not be possible this year, said Zapf.

"Ten snowman builders are usually on a voluntary basis, they are not allowed to meet."

In addition, the roughly ten meter high giant made of snow would attract too many onlookers.

Carnival without the giant snowman is actually unthinkable in Bischofsgrün.

The snowman builders have been moving out with excavators, cranes and shovels since 1985.

On Rose Monday, the Franconian village traditionally celebrates its «Jakob» with its own snowman festival.
