Berlin / Mainz (dpa) - The federal and state interior ministers want to discuss how Germany can be better equipped for crises and disasters in the future - also against the background of the corona pandemic.

"When it comes to civil protection, we have to make adjustments - that is very clear," said the Rhineland-Palatinate interior minister, Roger Lewentz, of the German press agency.

"After the fall of the Berlin Wall, we Germans immersed ourselves in a completely new sense of security and then let a lot of things slide - from the sirens to private precautions in the event of a disaster."

He is sure that the corona pandemic will result in many measures, said the SPD politician.

In this context, he is also curious to see which initial recommendations for action the federal states will receive from the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) under the new leadership.

This will be discussed at the Interior Ministers' Conference (IMK) planned for June 16.

The IMK is currently chaired by Baden-Württemberg.

Seehofer made the CDU member of the Bundestag Armin Schuster the new President of the BBK last November.

The background to the recall of his predecessor Christoph Unger was, among other things, the failed nationwide warning day in September.

There was also criticism of the too timid role in the Ministry's view that the Bonn authority played in networking the state authorities responsible for disaster control in peacetime.

"I have the impression that the majority of the population is still behind the government measures to contain the pandemic," said Lewentz, who had erected grave lights and posters in front of his house a few days ago.

At the same time, he stated: "The number of lateral thinkers and lateral drivers is growing, and this small group is also becoming increasingly radical."

The interior minister said: "I find it regrettable that some people who are well educated are slipping away."

After all, there is no compulsory vaccination for Covid-19 in Germany and so far no rights only for vaccinated people.
