Uelzen (dpa / lni) - The Uelzen district administrator Heiko Blume (CDU) has turned to Lower Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs, Carola Reimann (SPD), with a fire letter in view of the still high corona numbers in the region.

His concern: The vaccination center in Uelzen should be supplied with vaccine as quickly as possible until the old people's and nursing homes and, in the next step, those over 80 years of age have reached a vaccination level that corresponds to that of other centers.

“As a result, everything else suggests a higher mortality rate for people in old people's and nursing homes and for those over 80 in the districts of Uelzen and Lüchow-Dannenberg.

Please contribute by properly distributing the vaccine to ensure that this additional preventable excess mortality is actually avoided, ”the letter said on Wednesday.

After the incidence in the Uelzen district had risen to more than 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, more stringent restrictions were recently imposed on old people's and nursing homes.

The value was also highest in the country on Thursday at 225.1.

Blume had already sent letters to the Minister of Social Affairs on January 13th and 29th, in which he had requested additional vaccinations due to the age structure and the above-average number of old people's and nursing homes compared to other districts.

However, according to Blume, the Ministry refused.

According to the district administrator, 75 percent of deaths in the Uelzen district are attributable to people over 80 years old, and 50 percent to residents of old people's and nursing homes.

“Current experience shows that the currently largest and most symptomatic outbreaks occur in old people's and nursing homes that have not yet been vaccinated.

This should correspond to the nationwide experience. "

In the districts of Uelzen and Lüchow-Dannenberg, the proportion of over 80-year-olds is highest at 8.4 and 8.7 percent, respectively.
