Munich / Passau (dpa) - The new CDU chairman Armin Laschet is to appear this year on the political Ash Wednesday of the sister party CSU.

CSU General Secretary Markus Blume confirmed on Wednesday.

First the "Saarbrücker Zeitung" reported on the invitation, citing party circles.

The appearance is a first for a CDU chairman.

"In over 70 years of Ash Wednesday history, this is a real novelty and an expression of the new cooperation between the CDU and CSU," said Blume from the German press agency in Munich.

The main speaker at the traditional rally of the CSU on political Ash Wednesday is party leader Markus Söder.

The event is to take place digitally this year due to the corona pandemic.

Laschet is therefore switched on via video.

In addition to the main speech, there are various switching and feature films, said Blume, also with Laschet.

"True to this year's motto" Ash Wednesday at home ", he will speak a video greeting."

The rally is to take place as a kind of "studio production" from the traditional venue Passau.

Söder and Blume are to be on site in Passau in Lower Bavaria - all others are connected.

"Apart from that, everything is as always, we're looking forward to the world's largest regulars' table, this time virtually," said Blume.

The federal elections will also play a major role in the political Ash Wednesday this year.

As party leaders, Laschet and Söder have to decide on the Union's candidacy for chancellor.

Traditionally, the parties have a political exchange on Ash Wednesday, to which, under normal circumstances, many political celebrities from Berlin travel to Bavaria.

The event of the CSU in the Passauer Dreiländerhalle is considered to be the largest meeting.

Ash Wednesday falls on February 17th this year.
