At 73, the economist and former president of the European Central Bank is considered the man who saved the euro zone in 2012. He has just been received by the head of state Sergio Mattarella, supreme arbiter in the event of a political crisis.

After agreeing to try to form a government to get Italy out of the crisis, he called for “unity” to face “a difficult moment”.

“

This is a difficult time.

Defeating the pandemic, continuing the vaccination campaign and relaunching the country are the challenges that await us

, ”declared the former head of the European Central Bank after his meeting with President Sergio Mattarella.

He said he was "

confident that unity will emerge from discussions with political parties and parliamentary groups

 ".

As underlined by most of the media, Mario Draghi is known for his determination and his deep sense of responsibility, has the capacity to get the country out of political deadlock.

It is urgent because the health, economic and social crisis worries both citizens and Italy's European partners.

The 5 Star Movement divided

But all the major parties still need to accept the government proposed by the technocrat.

However, the 5 Star Movement, which has a relative majority in Parliament, is divided.

Between the elected officials who refuse an executive headed "

by an apostle of the financial elites

" and those who would be ready to support Mario Draghi.

In addition, on the far-right side, League leader Matteo Salvini and Brotherhood of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni have yet to decide whether they will give up invoking early parliamentary elections.

These are so many question marks that do not allow us to say whether the mission of one of the most precious reserves of the Italian Republic will be possible or impossible.
